Where do all the broken hearts go?

The Museum of Broken Relationships is a crowdsourced platform that allows the broken-hearted to share their stories and relationship mementos. We at Infinum were tasked with creating a digital extension of the museum. The result is a responsive web app that connects the global community through stories of love and loss.

Since its inception, the Museum of Broken Relationships has attracted much attention from the global press and curious visitors. In 2011, it received the Kenneth Hudson Award for the most innovative museum. Currently, there are two permanent displays: one in Zagreb and in Los Angeles.

A walk through the museum takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, a poignant reminder of how fragile relationships can be. The displayed relationship relics come in many shapes, sizes and varieties, each representing a piece of history shared by those once in love.

A GLOBAL sensation

The Museum of Broken Relationships is a true globetrotter. The exhibit has traveled to 40 locations, including Buenos Aires, Paris, Cape Town, Manila and more. To further expand the museum’s global footprint, the clients wanted to launch a digital platform.

When the client approached us, they were looking to create a fresh interface for their museum. After a few workshops, the idea for a community-centered platform was born.

The centerpiece of the web app is a stylized world map pinpointing where breakups have occurred. As couples separate, this map unifies. The purpose of this feature is to show website visitors they’re not alone.

A map of pinned break-ups

To share a break-up, visitors simply pin their location to a map. They also have the option to share a written account of their emotional experience and attach a photo. Because visitors share intimate details, all data is anonymous.

Share modal

If it’s too painful to share a story right now, visitors can write it down and put it under a lock for a certain period of time. The story will be shown as locked, giving them much-needed time to confront their emotions.

Web technologies for this project were chosen with care. We built the web app built using React, Redux, and the API was implemented using the JSON API standard. We used Webpack to bring everything together so it doesn’t “drift” apart. To make the site snappy and fast, we added server-side rendering.
