We made cycling safer and smarter with the first digital rearview mirror for bicycles with AI-powered danger detection.
If you’ve ever navigated a busy city on two wheels, you know the constant need to check over your shoulder before every turn. It would be a lot easier if you had eyes in the back of your head, right? We took that saying literally and, together with Alps Alpine Europe, developed the first AI-powered digital review mirror for cyclists, transforming bike safety with real-time danger detection.
The Ride Safety System features an AI-powered rear bike camera that transmits a live feed of the road behind to a smartphone app mounted on the bike’s handlebars. This setup acts as a virtual rearview mirror, allowing cyclists to keep their focus ahead while staying aware of what’s happening behind—something previously unavailable on the market.
Making cycling safer with technology
As cycling grows in popularity across cities in Europe and the U.S., more people are choosing it as their primary means of transportation. While this is a win for the environment and public health, the growing number of cyclists adds to the congestion on already busy city streets. With e-bikes reaching up to 45 kilometers per hour, it is a dangerous environment for cyclists, but the industry hasn’t kept pace with safety innovations.
While there have been attempts to address this issue, existing solutions rely primarily on sound.
Powered by a machine learning algorithm, the Ride Safety System detects approaching vehicles and displays alerts for cyclists on a screen. People naturally respond better to visual cues, so this innovative feature significantly improves cycling safety.
The system also features a tail light and an automatic brake light that signals to drivers and other traffic participants when the bike is slowing down or stopping. In the event of an accident, it automatically records and stores footage, capturing the moments leading up to the crash.
Partnering with Alps Alpine for award-winning innovation
Alps Alpine Europe is a world-renowned manufacturer of high-quality automotive electronics committed to enhancing cyclist comfort and safety. Having built a state-of-the-art bicycle camera, they sought our help to design and develop a companion app to turn it into a smart safety system.
Working on this unique project, the biggest technical challenge was ensuring the camera feed streamed to the app with minimal delay.
“Anything under a second is considered magic, and we achieved around 300 milliseconds – nearly imperceptible to the human eye,” explained Bojan Komljenović, Infinum’s experienced solution architect.
The Ride Safety System’s innovative strength hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2023, it won the prestigious Eurobike Award at Europe’s largest bike and mobility event, standing out among hundreds of competing innovations in the cycling and e-mobility sector—many of which were traditional bikes and equipment, rather than digital solutions.
